A bit About Amy and Camden

Amy Jade Winehouse was an English singer and songwriter. Her life was marked by both musical brilliance and personal struggles. Here are a few facts about Amy’s life:

  • Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, in London, England.
  • She was a Londoner who knew her music, she could sing jazz, soul and hip hop and had an incredible voice.
  • She went to Sylvia Young school and was also a former BRIT School student.
  • She moved to Camden at the age of 20 during the Frank era of her career and Camden became her spiritual home.
  • Her album, “Back to Black”  in 2006, became an international sensation and one of the best-selling albums in UK history.
  • At the 2007 Brit Awards, she won British Female Solo Artist, and the song “Rehab” earned her a second Ivor Novello Award.
  • At the 50th Grammy Awards (2008), she won five Grammys, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Rehab”
  • On July 23, 2011, she tragically died of alcohol poisoning at the age of Just 27.

The Hawley Arms Pub Camden

The Hawley Arms pub was a favourite hang out of Amy Winehouse and also where she was renowned for hopping behind the bar to pull a pint. Allegedly Amy’s favorite tipple was a “Rickstasy,” a drink unique to this pub. It consists of vodka, banana liqueur, Southern Comfort, and Baileys. However when asking in the pub the staff say this was made up and never existed.

Anyhow, you can pop into this famous Camden pub and see memorabilia of Amy and many other famous people and bands all over the walls. Other celebrity’s such as Liam Gallagher, Kate Moss, and Pete Doherty all drank in the pub at some point, but the Hawley owed its fame to Amy Winehouse.

Amy’s Home 30 Camden Square

You can visit Camden Square where Amy lived. The Amy Winehouse house in Camden is on a quiet leafy street and is visited often by fans and tourists alike to pay their respects. When she passed away, people flocked there and laid flowers and left trinkets for the singer. There is one shrine left today on the tree opposite where fans still leave a gesture of their love.

Unfortunately people graffiti the wall of the home to this day which is a shame for the owners. It is kindly requested that you do not.

Find the Amy Winehouse Statue

In the Stables, Camden Market you will find a life-size bronze statue of Amy, designed by her father, in the heart of her favorite hangout spot. On September 14, 2014, a bronze statue of Amy Winehouse, crafted by artist Scott Eaton, was revealed in the Stables Market—a location adjacent to one of her cherished places.

The statue captures Winehouse’s iconic beehive hairdo and her  high heels. During the unveiling, a real red rose adorned her hair—a familiar accessory she often wore during her captivating performances. Now people queue for photos and leave friendship bracelets on her wrist and flowers by her feet.

In November 2019, the London Music Walk of Fame was inaugurated to honor exceptional musicians. Amy Winehouse’s plaque was the third to be unveiled and received a tribute in Camden in March 2020. The music walk of fame is set to extend along Chalk Farm Road in the years to come. If you’re searching for Amy Winehouse’s plaque, you will find it across the road from Camden Town Station, outside Barclays Bank.

The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm

The Roundhouse iconic music venue hosted Amy’s last ever UK gig in 2011. Undoubtedly one of London’s most remarkable music venues, the former railway engine shed was originally slated to house Camden Market’s bronze statue of Amy Winehouse. It was within these walls, on July 20, that Winehouse graced the stage for her final UK performance, sharing it with her god-daughter, Dionne Bromfield.

Primrose Hill

Primrose Hill was a favourite spot for Amy to catch glimpses of London’s skyline and switch off from fame. She was often spotted here relaxing in the park with her husband at the time Blake Fielder.

Abney park cemetery

Abney park cemetery is known as one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ garden cemeteries, Abney Park was the setting for Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ music video.

The 100 club

Amy’s dad Mitch said in his eulogy for Amy that her true last gig was in 100 Club on 12th June 2011 just before Belgrad. Amy performed here and if you are lucky you may catch an Amy Winehouse tribute act which her parents are sometimes known to attend.

Many portraits in the Collection are painted from life, but this painting of Amy Winehouse, the Grammy award winning singer was painted after her death at the age of 27.

Moved by the news, the artist searched for images and cropped and simplified her face and added her dramatic sweeping eyeliner.

The translucent blue colours refers to her troubled life and music influences.

Amy Winehouse Famous London Quote

When Amy Won her Grammy she famously shouted this quote! Amy ended her speech with ‘For London this is for London, cause Camden Town ain’t burning down’ which referred to a fire that had broken out in Camden markets Hawley Arms pub on the 9th February 2008.

For London, this is for London cause Camden town ain’t burning down

The drink that you’re talking about is called the Wrexacy and you can only get it from the Good Mixer. if you are known a bit and vetted by the landlady. It’s a cream/milk based variation of a white Russian with all those liqueurs but two more.6 spirits in total. If you drink one you’ll wake up in another post code insomeone else’s underwear with a book of stamps.
