A Majestic Tribute to British Royalty

The iconic Gloriana, a magnificent royal rowing barge rich in history and tradition, has made a grand return to the picturesque St Katharine Docks in London On. With its regal presence, the Gloriana stands as a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, commissioned in 2012 for her Diamond Jubilee.
The visionary behind this noble project, Lord Sterling of Plaistow, along with his dedicated team, brought this masterpiece to life in just five months. The vessel’s name, bestowed by the Queen herself, echoes the character “Gloriana” from 16th-century poet Edmund Spenser’s works, representing Queen Elizabeth I.
Building the Gloriana Row Barge

Spanning 84 feet in length and powered by 18 expert oarsmen alongside two electric engines, the Gloriana is a marvel of craftsmanship and elegance. Its design, inspired by Canaletto’s paintings of 18th-century London barges, features intricate details that showcase fine artistry.
A skilled team, including naval architects Stuart Roy and Ed Burnett, project manager Damian Byrne MVO, and master-builder Mark Edwards MBE, constructed the Gloriana using traditional methods. The flooring, crafted from sweet chestnut trees on King Charles’s estate, and the ornate carvings, finished with 23.5-carat gold leaf, exude royal splendour. The meticulously crafted oars, made by Windsor’s renowned J Sutton Blades, further enhance the barge’s grandeur.
