Did you know that In 2020, a bronze statue of Mary Poppins was installed in Leicester Square, London, as part of the Scenes in the Square trail? The statue depicts Mary Poppins landing from flight with her umbrella raised, as featured in the 1964 film. The statue is a tribute to how much loved the character Mary Poppins is and her influence on cinema and culture.

Where is the Mary Poppins Statue?

The remarkable statue of Mary Poppins Statue is situated in the home of film at London Leicester Square near Piccadilly Circus. You can find the bronze statue of her with her Umbrella and carpetbag among the flower beds next door to the Lego store opposite Leicester St.

Mary Poppins is my favourite statue is the amazing Mary Poppins Statue in Leicester Square Gardens. Mary lands gracefully with her umbrella in the air! A favourite film from 1964 and a great example of 1960s cinema. Mary Poppins (originally played by Julie Andrews) is loved by children and adults alike even today. She can be seen with her hat, coat, umbrella and bottomless Mary Poppins Bag ready to take flight.

Why is the Mary Poppins statue in Leicester Square?

The Mary Poppins Statue is in Leicester Square as part of the Scenes in the Square which are a series of movie history statues that are on display in London’s movie premiere district. It is a great place for film lovers to explore with lots of popular film art installations of famous characters. Leicester Square is the heart of film and theatre shows in London.

Who is Mary Poppins?

Mary Poppins is a fictional character created by P. L. Travers, who first appeared in a series of books published from 1934 to 1988. She is a magical nanny who flies with her umbrella and has various adventures with the Banks family in London.

One of the most famous adaptations of Mary Poppins is the 1964 Disney musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The film features many iconic scenes and songs, such as “A Spoonful of Sugar”, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, and “Chim Chim Cher-ee”

Mary Poppins was on at the Prince Edward Theatre the musical closed in January 2023.

Where is the Mary Poppins Authors plaque in London?

The English Heritage Blue Plaque to P. L. Travers is at 50 Smith Street in Chelsea where she lived after returning from America in 1945. It was here that she raised her son, Camillus, and where she resided during the film negotiations with Disney.

Where was Mary Poppins filmed?

The original Mary Poppins was filmed entirely at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.  

Where was Mary Poppins Returns filmed?

Mary Poppins Returns the film was filmed in London’s Shepperton Studios. It was also shot on location in and around the city of London. Everything was staged and set and dressed to appear as it was in the 1930s. These are the filming locations of Mary Poppins Returns:

  • The Bank of England in the city of London was used in Mary Poppins Returns as it fits with the 1930s era in which the movie is set.
  • Buckingham Palace, Victoria Monument at Constitution Hill in London. In fact they were spotted filming there too!
  • St Paul’s Cathedral in the St Paul’s Churchyard, City of London, England, UK
  • The Gardens of Pinewood Studios, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, England.
  • It was also filmed at Shepperton Studios, Shepperton in Surrey.

Admiral’s Walk in Hampstead

Take a look at Admiral’s Walk in Hampstead, NW3, and Admiral’s House. It was painted by John Constable and was home to architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is said to be the inspiration for the home of Admiral Boom in the PL Travers’ Mary Poppins books. Lieutenant Fountain North, built a quarterdeck on the roof and was said to fire cannons to celebrate notable events.
