Sir George Frampton Memorial in St Paul’s Cathedral

Hidden St Paul’s Cathedral Crypt is a very unusual memorial that many people walk past without even noticing. The Sir George Frampton memorial in St Paul’s Cathedral commemorates the esteemed sculptor who created the famous Peter Pan statue in London’s Kensington Gardens. Frampton was influential in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and made many sculptures and memorial’s himself across the UK.

A miniature Statue of Peter Pan in London on the Sir George Frampton Memorial in St Paul’s Cathedral

In the Crypt under St Paul’s a memorial, sculpted by Ernest Gillick in 1930, features a bronze child holding a miniature replica of Frampton’s Peter Pan statue.

The Memorial of Sir George Frampton is an alcove which features a cherub type child and the Peter Pan Statue. The Statue of Peter Pan is only a few inches high and rest’s in the left hand of the baby. Peter Pan is seen in the same stance blowing a trumpet as the Peter Pan Statue in Kensington Gardens.

Sir George Frampton’s ashes are not here but rest in a niche on the ground floor of the east wing of the Ernest George Columbarium in Golders Green,

Ernest Gillick sculpted the George Frampton Memorial as he was highly regarded as a sculptor of memorials at the time, with works in Britain, France, and India.

Who is Sir George Frampton?

Sir George Frampton (1860-1928) was a prominent avant-garde sculptor known for his versatility in working with various materials such as stone, metal, and enamels. His most famous work is the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens. Frampton was deeply involved in the Arts and Crafts movement and was associated with Art Nouveau and Symbolism early in his career. He held prestigious positions including President of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Frampton’s work includes notable memorials and statues, such as those of Queen Victoria and war memorials featuring St. George.
